Challenge Perceptions

Bianca leaned on the conference table, taking one last minute to look over the numbers for the Peterson account when Ruby rushed into her office looking frazzled and winded. Strands of hair in her usually immaculate bangs hung freely in her face, and the pink tint to her natural pale skin gave Ruby a warm glow that Bianca felt a yearning for. She looked down at her watch. Five minutes late, perfect .

“I’m sorry I’m late ma’am, traffic delayed the car picking me up.” Ruby offered, having been told the same by the driver. Bianca fought to hide the smirk on her lips. The car had been late picking her up, she’d told the driver to arrive a few minutes later.

“No matter. You’re here. The meeting has moved up to nine forty-five and I need you to talk to the conclusions.” She could almost see the red flush from Ruby’s skin at the suggestion that Ruby would brief the team on their aspect of the account without any preparation.

“But… ma’am, I’m… I’m not..” Ruby stopped, uncertain how she could argue the point. Her eyes stayed locked on her mentor as the gears behind her eyes worked on how best to approach the subject without drawing the ire of the woman before her.

“What’s the problem Ruby?” Bianca turned, her hand firmly on the soft gray blouse fabric on her shoulder. Fingers pressed lightly into that skinny arm as Ruby’s mind raced. “You’ve been studying these files for over a month. You know them better than anyone in this room. Just assess the value of the information you have and give a recommendation.”

Bianca’s voice was steady and firm. “Think of it this way…” She continued, moving closer to Ruby until her mouth was barely touching her ear. Bianca was certain the warmth of her breath brushing that soft pale lobe would spread heat all across Ruby’s skin. Her tone softened and her voice became a whisper. “It’s no more threatening than giving yourself up to two strange men and letting them ravage your body in front of your teacher.”

The hand on her young skinny shoulder slid down Ruby’s arm. Bianca’s palm brushed along the full round globe, so pert and tender beneath the silky softness of Ruby’s blouse. She could sense the demeanor shift in Ruby. Her exasperation at being thrown to the wolves faded and the strength and determination she’d shown so many times during their extracurricular activities surfaced.

Ruby stood straight and looked into Bianca’s eyes. “Yes ma’am. I’ll do my best.” She finally said, strength with an undertone of anxiety carried her as Ruby stepped up to the table and pulled together the master file on all the parts of the Peterson account.

“Of that I have no doubt pet.” Bianca smirked.

A moment later the team filtered into the conference room, taking seats around the table, all eyes on Ruby who sat straight and confident to the right of Bianca. Most of the team, Ruby only met in passing. Connected
